This metaphor relates to many explosive movements in sports. If we think about a tennis player at the top of the serve, the trunk/spine is extended - then the trunk is flexed to finish the movement. This "sit up and throw" works the opening and closing of the trunk dynamically. The med ball can also be thrown against a wall or to a partner for reps.
